As a faculty or staff member, you’ll have access to a world of IT support and resources, including software. Simply follow the steps below.

Before or on your start date

Step 1: Locate your MIT ID number

When you were hired, you received an ID number.  If you haven’t received your ID number yet, contact your hiring manager or Human Resources.

You must have an ID number to set up your MIT Kerberos account and certificates.

Step 2: Register for your MIT Kerberos/Athena/email account

Your MIT Kerberos account is sometimes referred to as an Athena or email account. Sign up using the MIT Kerberos account registration page.

Step 3: Get certificates for your computers and mobile devices

Certificates let you log on safely to MITnet and the internet, and identify you to various MIT websites.

Notes:

  • You can use your certificates immediately. However, some websites may not recognize you for a few hours to two days after you register for your account.
  • Certificates expire every year on July 31, which means you'll need to renew them at least that often. Install them on each browser for each computer or device you will use to access certificate-protected sites.

Step 4: Familiarize yourself with your MIT email account

Visit outlook.office.com to begin using web-based email and setting up your preferences. If you'd prefer to use a desktop email program, IS&T recommends Outlook, which you can download from office.com after logging in via Touchstone, or from IS&T's software page.

On or after your start date

Step 1: Securely connect to MITnet

On campus, connect wirelessly to MITnet, the Institute’s computer network, using the MIT SECURE WiFi network, and log in using your Kerberos username and password. Wired internet connectivity is also available.

Off campus, securely connect to MITnet using MIT’s Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Step 2: Secure your devices, data, and identity

Unfortunately, MIT is a target for cyber criminals. Protect yourself from cyber attacks by taking the necessary steps.

Step 3: Create a backup plan for your data

Don’t wait for a hard drive crash or software glitch to ruin your research and lesson plans. Set up a data backup plan now and avoid a meltdown later.

Step 4: Browse and download available software

As an employee, you have access to a large volume of software to use in the workplace. Browse IS&T's Software Grid and download what’s available.

Step 5: Find discounts on mobile plans

MIT employees are eligible for discount pricing on personal purchases from a number of vendors and suppliers, including on cell phone plans.

Step 6: Download the MIT Atlas mobile app

The MIT Atlas mobile app (available for iOS and Android) will help you to navigate your MIT world, allowing you to interact with the community and the systems you need to organize and accomplish your work.

Step 7: Review available resources

Now that you’re up and running, take a look at all the IT resources available to you.

Visit Atlas to update your personal contact information and set up direct deposit.
Note: Your Atlas access takes effect 48 hours after you register for your MIT Kerberos account, or on your official start date, whichever is later.
